Bowdoin College is an independent liberal arts school located in the coastal town of Brunswick, Maine. Founded in 1794, the campus anchors the southern edge of the town common, with a well-preserved central quad of period brick buildings and heritage shade trees. Over the past two decades, the College has embraced the notion of blending old and new with a series of modern architectural expansions and renovations, all integrated within their historic village context. An ecosystem of mature pines surrounds the campus perimeter, giving the outer edges of the College a unique rural quality. Since working as the campus landscape architect, SSA has reinforced the concept of hybridizing history with modern interventions. Recent projects focus on improving the pedestrian experience on campus and along the College Street corridor, strengthening green space connections, developing holistic standards for site furnishings and details, and establishing a campus-wide plant palette that is indigenous to this part of coastal Maine.
