Dirtworks responded to Danbury Hospital’s health, privacy, and budget needs to create this 4,000 square foot roof garden. The purpose of the project was to create a positive and healing environment where parents and family members could benefit from the restorative qualities of nature on their own terms and pace, while remaining close to the NICU. A controlled-access interior link connects the pavilion with the NICU. The garden is entered through the pavilion under a vine-covered trellis. A central seating area provides opportunities for socializing while private areas on the side allow relaxation and quiet respite. Custom wood and metal structures provide shade and privacy in the garden and screen adjacent mechanical equipment and service areas.
