Over the past 15 years, gmp has been commissioned with the design of several large-scale industrial quarters in the Lingang Industry Area. All of these projects consist in a combination of one- or two-story high production halls with multistory administration areas. Given the urban context, the sheer size of such structures alone means they play a decisive role in establishing a company’s identity—or even that of an entire industrial area. In architectural terms, the huge scale of such buildings calls for large-format design elements.

After the first and very successful designs, nick-named the “Blue Halls”, the “Barcode Halls” and the “Rimova Halls”, a new series of bold designs can now be visited in Lingang:
Jadeite Park consists of 15 production and administration buildings of varying heights that are unified by a contrastive façade of vertically installed corrugated steel panels. The ground floor areas show calm, large format facades of either light silver corrugated steel, dark metal paneling at the factory entrances or full height glazing at the office buildings. Above a unifying horizontal division, all facades are vertically structured with aligned operable windows that are set back into dark paneled stripes between light silver elements of varying widths. By playfully sequencing different widths of window elements, dark panels and light silver corrugated steel panels, a lively rhythm is added to the otherwise rigid and orderly volumes. In some ground floor areas, perforated corrugated steel was used to further vary the façade appearance and produce a vivid transparency to both outside and inside.

For the Lingang Warehouse C06-01, a completely different language was used in the façade design: The four extremely large building volumes that house storage facilities on two floors, had no requirements for daylighting and only needed openings at regular distances for access by the fire brigade. The design picks up the specific rhythm given by the access requirements and works with concave, curved cement panel elements that reminisce silos and thus emphasize the industrial character of the project. Sharp shadows are produced on the bright, smooth concrete plaster surfaces and enhance the plasticity of the facades in stark contrast to the sky.

The third project, called Diamond Park, works with even stronger three-dimensional elements. The industrial park consists of several building types of different shapes and floor heights for which a unifying, yet diversified design was chosen. Full-height vertical metal clad elements are either tilted outwards or towards the building, with vertical setbacks in-between that accommodate windows or other functional openings. These elements either reach straight up over the full height of the building, or they are folded twice to produce a dancing, zig-zag outline when seen from the side. A third variation is in the material: For the administration building, the vertical tilted elements are fully glazed and thus highlight its special function.
