The Cove Hollow House, a new creation by Architecture Outfit, is nestled in the surrounding landscape on a spacious site in East Hampton, New York. Drawing inspiration from the region's traditional rustic vernacular, the architects have planned a series of structures, all linked by a common expression and materiality.
As a fusion of old and new, Cove Hollow House brings the existing traditional farmhouse to the site and arranges a series of complementary structures around the central open landscape area. The combination of time and space allows the old details and manual functions to coexist with the new, balancing each other in harmony.
Neutral hues form the basis of the interior, with cool hues connecting the textiles throughout the house and contrasting with calm neutral hues. The sunken living area is designed as a gathering place. The Japanese denim interior provides an inviting burst of color.
The addition of modern houses, pool houses and framed landscaped areas all contribute to the pleasant environment of the entire site where the project is located, creating an open and shared central area. In dividing the building, the architects needed to interact with the landscape throughout the day and four seasons. As the landscape changes, so does the interaction with the natural elements, transforming the experience of the house.
The open living area sits between the more formal open landscape and the organic and more natural gardens outside the home. Expressing respect for the place, glass is widely used as a constant reminder of the natural environment, with frame holes throughout the home and bringing nature into the interior. The original farmhouse has its own presence on the site as a marker for the streetscape, and other ancillary buildings have their own unique character.
