Watermark Properties acquired Macatawa Legends Golf Club in 2018. Their goal was to breathe new life into the club and transform it into the region's premier event venue, recognizing local demand for a grander event space. With the club's transformation, they also sought to enhance public accessibility, which required the renovation of their public restaurant and bar space.
A large focus of the renovation was placed on the event space. Prior to the renovation, the banquet area was located in the basement, without any windows. The transformation relocated the event space to the upper floor, while the restaurant was moved to the bottom floor. The new event space was designed as a more modern environment, and highlights the large volume of open space, allowing the vaulted ceiling and large wood trusses to take center stage.
It now seats 350 and offers a 180-degree outdoor view of the scenic golf course, in addition to a covered open-air balcony. The new event space bar became a design feature with steel and glass elements. A smaller, more intimate club room was also included to accommodate smaller groups.
All of Macatawa Legends Golf Club's amenities are public, including the event venue, restaurant, and golf simulators that are open year round. To provide accessibility to the restaurant, our design incorporated a new entrance to the basement, allowing guests to directly enter the restaurant space, which also includes four golf simulators and a new bar. Golfers who use the simulators will be able to virtually play more than 50 golf courses from around the world. The new bar location also allows golfers direct access from the golf course.
