"Vertical Room" is a temporary hostel in an abandoned building in the suburbs of Milan. The project is based on the use of materials and shapes that underline the provisional nature of this space, where guests are supposed to live only two weeks. According to this, the crumbling partition of the original structure, ruined by the flow of time, are now part of the new configuration of space in order to keep the memory of the past of the building alive.
Main theme of the project is the verticality of the rooms: the intepretation of the personal space changes according to the height at which the user lives his space.Heart of the hostel is the structure of the suspended bed, under which the resident can share his private area with the roomates or modify the space in order to satisfy his needs. Actually, the real "room" of the guest is the volume under the bed, the main characteristic of which is a blurring boundary between private and public, closed and open.
The project of a system of mobile panels, hanging on a metal grill placed under the bed, allows the setting up of a different room any time the guest needs it.
