This challenging project on the Level 4 Roof Terrace of this residential block in Redfern involved the renovation of the space and installation of extensive construction elements. As well as difficult weather events during the construction period (high winds, horizontal rain and extremely high temperatures), one of the two lifts in the block was being replaced. This made access difficult and a delicate public relations exercise among the residents.

Site constraints and site works included:

The existing lap pool and glass pool fence were to be retained and protected;

Materials handling and delivery required the use of a 55 tonne crane over three days while blocking three of the four lanes of Cope Street, Redfern;

The existing waterproof membrane on the concrete roof required the creation of new fixing points for the various construction elements. Approximately 20,000 Buzon polly pads were used to protect the membrane when building up at the fixing points for all the decking, paving and framing for the synthetic turf.

Two major galvanised steel structures were fabricated for installation on the roof terrace – a 25m long, 5m high shade structure parallel to, and above, the existing raised lap pool and a 35sqm undercover BBQ and dining area (construction details are included under the next heading). Merbau was used as beams and battens for the shade structure next to the pool.

Extensive Merbau timber was also installed as walkways and steps leading to the pool, as a raised sundeck around the pool, to clad the side of the raised pool and as decking for the dining and casual seating of the BBQ area.
