In a community with 3,500 special needs kids, having a place to call their own can make a difference.
Grant’s House is a 21-room center for kids and young adults with special needs and disabilities. Donations from the community helped transform a 50,000 square-foot former medical building into a place where they can play, learn practical life skills like cooking, hang out with friends, and feel right at home. It was established in memory of the late Grant Russell House, a child with special needs who had envisioned a center just like this one.
Grant loved bright, fun colors, which inspired the design for the entire space. The building uses more than 30 Patcraft patterns in unique colors, designs and textures – often installed in complex patterns like rainbows and piano keys. Each room’s dimensions and educational/recreational purpose, as well as the need for stain resistance and durability, were factors in each product decision. The flooring uses hues carefully selected for their sensory effect in both hard and soft surfaces while maintaining the smooth transitions needed for safety reasons.
Many classrooms feature resilient planks from Patcraft’s Crossover collection in a brilliant array of colors. Grant’s House also features innovative installations of modular carpet tile from Patcraft’s Work. Study.Play. collection. They also selected carpet tile from the Cube & Colour collection, which is ideal for fun, high-traffic school environments since it is constructed with durable Solution Q Extreme® Nylon fiber and backed with EcoWorx® tile.
At Grant’s House, every color in the rainbow and more create a fun, playful and thoughtful experience that staff and visitors love. The space inspires them, and helps them feel a passion for life.
“I wanted the kids to come in and always be wowed, and to have a space to call their own and enjoy. The color achieves that.”
Tamara House / co-founder of Grant’s House
