Foster以及他的团队对一所高架桥的设计在一个设计竞赛中拔得头筹。该设计项目的目标就是保证成品中超大规模的高架桥要与周围壮观美丽的自然景观步调一致,和谐融洽。该高架桥是世界上地理位置最高的高速公路,路面板下的混凝土桥墩向下逐渐变细,桥墩的侧面轮廓似乎被刻意造型,与周边的小型结构相比,显得十分优雅讲究,桥墩的劈裂设计加强了路面板与桥墩间的结构刚度,同时在视觉上,该结构显得更加清楚明了。该高速公路上共有两条车道,每个方向都有硬质路肩以防车辆紧急情况的出现。驾车的话穿过该桥需要一分钟的时间,桥的北边有一个收费站。

Foster and Partners’ design for the new viaduct was selected as the winner of a design competition.The design objective was to assure that the huge scale of the viaduct would appear as elegant and harmonious within the dramatic landscape setting. The viaduct has the highest elevated roadway in the world. The piers to the underside of the deck have tapering concrete forms whose sectional profile has been “sculpted” to render them more elegant whilst responding to minimum structural requirements. Split form below deck provides structural stiffness between deck and pier whilst achieving lighter visual form. It is a motorway with two lanes running in each direction with hard shoulders in case of emergencies. It will take approximately one minute to cross the bridge by car. There is a toll plaza to the North of the bridge.
The road deck slopes down at an angle of 3% from the South to the North. The deck has a gentle plan curve (20km radius) allowing drivers to appreciate the overall structural form as they approach and pass over the viaduct. The viaduct curves towards the town of Millau. The approximate cost is 320 Million Euros (privately funded). The viaduct was constructed by Eiffage. It took over 500 men just over three years to construct (October 2001 – December 2004).
