This new detached studio space was proposed for the rear of an existing two-storey dwelling in North Carlton.
The existing house lies within a heritage overlay that is surrounded by predominantly low-rise townhouses. The existing site conditions are quite restrictive and include a swimming pool in the rear courtyard. The unit was designed to be as non-invasive as possible, yet performs a big gesture by sitting tent-like on steel portal frames that bridge over the existing pool. The established palm trees and landscape were to remain unaffected by the proposal.
The form of the unit respects stringent setback requirements and emulates the dominant roof forms in the area. Rhinezinc cladding and terracotta shingles provide material richness to complement the brickwork used on the existing house and surrounding buildings.
