‘Nap room’Sleep For Sale
My research started by reading several books and videos about the relationship between customers and retail environments from the past to the present. With the chain stores and global factors cover the high street, what types of the store or the shopping behavior is popular? It is my research question. Through collecting the resources, I realized that under the pressure of online shopping, the modern physical retailers have to upgrade their selling strategies especially installing interactive devices in store (Hara, 2007). Also, According to Harvey(1998)’s Analyses, it revealed that interactive components, multisensory stimulation, and dynamic displays influenced flow and immersion. It is witnessed as a future direction, providing a better shopping experience for customers (Lindstrom, 2012)
Some researched shows, people living today sleep significantly less than generations before with sleep disorders on the rise, costing the economy billions (Underhill, 2009). With the quantity and quality of sleep being constantly challenged by round the clock communications and globalized business. Therefore, it’s becoming increasingly important to improve the quality of our resting time and develop the necessary skills for sleep. Considering these factors and combined with my previous research, I decided to design a sale of sleep on the retail space as the theme of my research project.
Some research on the factors lead to sleep troubles. From the report named sleep: A Sociological Interpre tation, it could be concluded.•Different people may have different sleeping time and habit. •Second, sleeping time does not equal to sleeping quality. According to Buckminster Fuller’s report's he provided an effective way of sleep, resting 30 minutes after per 6 hours will gain more energy. Thus, I want to set up a sleeping space by the way of pop up store. It is not similar to a bedroom, because it is a temporary space. So it is movable to anywhere, airport, and company even shopping mall. 30 minutes little nap could enhance working efficiency.
Technology The development and popularity of wearable devices such as intellectual bracelet, necklace could track our sleeping and record in the future, not only quality, duration of sleep, but also users’ preferences such as lighting and the soft or hard of our mattress. From collecting those data, with the analysis of doctors, it could provide a restorative, calm and contemplative experience for consumers. At the mean time, the mattress of nap room could also record personal data, such as the frequency of turnover, to judge how suitable of the temperature and softness.
Location:Airport, company and shopping mall. Nap room is characterized as a closed space, and designed for a short period of sleep. The special sound and lighting is settled to make people fall asleep faster. Thus, I intend to set up a sleeping space by the way of pop up store. It is not similar to a bedroom, because it is a temporary space. So it is movable to anywhere needs it.
Then your personal data will reflect on mattress, interactive core inside will adjust the softness of mattress, different supportive point and suitable temperature. Later on, user will have an experience as they are in the Familiar sleep environment, which can get rid of anxiety and tension before going to sleep , get wrapped a sense of security, resulting in high-quality sleep .When the nap comes to the end, the mattress will vibrate softly to wake people up gradually instead of awaking suddenly.
Conclusion As designers we have to regularly take the role of field researchers. Throughout my project 2, due to previous experience, I tried to spend most time on collecting data. At first, I scanned all the information and resources, then filter from those, which inspired me and draw my attention. It has been important for me to explore a more suitable cut-in, instead reject what I studied before, even though it sometime has meant going off topic to later pull back and make an outcome relevant as part of my research.
