The fact that cities expand during the process of urbanization indicates that the ‘boundary’ of artificial and natural or between city and countryside is not fixed. The City of Wenzhou plans to expand towards Southeast, combining the urban area of Northwest with the airport of Southeast through Wenzhou Avenue. The site is located within an agricultural field with numerous small water channels – a typical landscape of southern Zhejiang Province. The design tried to integrate this first impression into the new technology parks rather than delete it. Using existing water channels, the design succeeded in introducing wetland landscape into the park, which looks like a building complex built within a wetland. At the same time, the water surface functions as a buffer zone between the park and the busy Wenzhou Avenue. Being landmark buildings, the southern towers along Wenzhou Avenue relate in scale and rhythm to its surroundings, creating a vivid nearby view, while the staggered design and development building on North draw an undulating skyline in the middle, together with high-rise office buildings forming an East-West pedestrian zone whose scale is more human-orientated and comfortable. The elegant outline of distant Huangshi Mountain is the natural skyline of the city.
The GFA of this project is ca. 300.000m², hosting biotechnical firms and institutes in the future.
