In 2017 Highgate Primary School asked Collective Works to improve an underutilised space in their playground. The school needed flexible space that could be used for formal learning as well as informal play and performances by the children. The school has a belief in the importance of outdoor learning, understanding that it not only promotes emotional and physical health but also combats under achievement. Collective Works held design hacks with their team before holding an inclusive ideas workshop to gather and incorporate the children’s thoughts on colours, shapes and landscapes. When asked why learning outside is so important they simply explained “we can shout and run too!”

Once the design was complete however a lack of funding meant the project went on hold. The practice drew on their experience of crowdfunding and partnered with local organisation, OmVed Gardens to arrange a fundraising dinner and auction. Omved Garden’s Chef, and advocate for the World Food Programme, Arthur Potts Dawson prepared a five course meal and the evening raised nearly £3000. With this much needed injection of funds, building commenced in the summer of 2018.

The 65 sqm space, which is formed of a larch platform and colourful backdrop, is being used every day by small groups of children for activities such as reading, arts and crafts, or listen to storytelling. One of the children’s favourites features are the secret spaces that are too small for adults to fit which are normally house the yellow stools.

The school’s teachers have reported that some children have already been using these spaces to calm down and reset if and when faced by frustrations during indoor learning. The stools can also be stacked or used as building blocks, arranged at different heights to allow for a climbing route up and over with different views of the rest of the playground. The space will also offer somewhere to put on a show, spontaneously, or to practice for school assemblies and performances and as a comfortable waiting place for parents and carers at pick up times.

“A rather dark and somewhat windswept space within the Early Years’ playground, has been completely transformed with the creation of ‘The Outdoor Classroom’. Collective Work’s unique and innovative creation has inspired children to play in a range of imaginative and quite brilliant ways – it becomes a magical castle to hide from mythical creatures, a habitat for baby owls to nest and a stage on which to perform the best shows. — William Dean, Head Teacher at Highgate Primary

“By moving away from the catalogue sets of play equipment, we wanted to design a space that creates its own narrative, and is enjoyable for children and adults alike. Spaces for children should be designed with as much consideration as spaces for adults.” — Siri Zanelli, Partner at Collective Works
“We wanted to translate the Children’s ambitions into a structure which, like nature, offer freedom, so the children could escape to an imaginary land. The climbing path was designed to encourage their bravery and curiosity and being directly opposite the conventional classrooms also means that colours from the structure are visible from indoors too.” — Natalia Zwardon,Collective Works
