This is one of our endevour under 'Architect For Left-over Spaces'. It is our prize-winning entry to the 'Butterworth Outer Ring Road (B.O.R.R.) Urban Public Spaces Below Highway Design Competition' originised by Think City Sdn. Bhd. in 2019.
The design seeks to renew the under utilised spaces below the flyover of B.O.R.R. highway in Penang Mainland with animated water, light, interactive activities, food & local history to create a mini happy community space and create a unique gateway to the iconic ferry terminal & the shorefront nearby.
Sustainbility Elements:
1. Water Recycling Tank for water curtains
2. Rain water harvested for watering plants
3. Café & Wash rooms modified from recycled shipping container
4. Seats recycled from ferry floats
5. Low VOC paint
6. Air-purifying plants
Landscape:
1. Air-purifying plants (Filter traffic fume)
2. Edible plants (Promote Farm to Fork route)
3. Murraya Paniculata hedges (Emit aroma help to reduce stress)
Safety elements:
1. safety railing hidden within hedges
2. Ramps access, interlinked pathways
Target groups:
Students, Buskers, Sport Regulars, Line Dancers/Aerobic Dancers/Taichi Students, Yoga Students, Event Organisers, Young Adult, Family
Activities:
Watching/Rehearsing performance, After-school programme, Sports, Hanging-out, Jogging, Rohingya refugees recreational programme.
This performance & sports orientated park features the digital printed film of the historical painting that shows the socio-economic
& cultural state of Seberang Perai (Penang Mainland) people in the 50’ on the ceiling, framing the performing art activities below it. The design provides conducive space to activate healthy after school programme & nearby Rohingya refugees recreational programme.
This design can be replicated at any spaces under flyover else where to spice up the urban open spaces for urban folks to enjoy.
