Mount Sinai Hess Center
Envisioned as a place of discovery and healing, Mount Sinai Hess Center, by SOM, is shaped by its translational research mission and urban context. It is located in Upper Manhattan and it places researchers, clinicians, educators and patients in an integrated environment. The 11-story building is specifically designed to foster multi-disciplinary interaction through a network of formal and informal settings.

The Mount Sinai Health System’s Leon and Norma Hess Center for Science and Medicine brings nearly a half-million square-feet of new, state-of-the-art medical research and clinical facilities to the area, meeting the expansion needs of Mount Sinai’s world-class research and clinical programs. Featuring six full floors of laboratory spaces and two floors of out-patient clinical space, the Hess Center houses most of Mount Sinai’s cancer-related research and clinics.

Translational research relating to cancer, cardiovascular disease, child health, genetics and the brain are also expanding into the building. Hess Center brings experts across disciplines together in one state-of-the-art facility – a union of talent and technology designed to advance Mount Sinai’s fight against the world’s most challenging diseases.

The primary design objective was to craft a flexible environment that would be inspiring and supportive for employees while gracious and dignified for patients and their families. Inside, natural light and a warm, simple material palette puts cancer patients at ease. However, on the exterior, the building features brick and glass and ample glazing on the ground level which helps to create a welcoming aesthetic. Located in an economically challenged neighborhood, the building shares its compact site with a residential tower built concurrently to offset the medical center’s cost.
