The site of this project is the old Merinos textile factory grounds, one of the landmarks of Turkey’s industrialization process during the 20th century. Originally opened by M. K. Atatürk in 1938, the Merinos factory was abandoned after the year 2000, until the Bursa Metropolitan Municipality envisioned the transformation of this complex, in 2005, to meet the contemporary social and cultural needs of the growing city of Bursa. The former factory building has been transformed into the Merinos Culture Center, housing numerous cultural facilities such as a music conservatory, museums and art galleries. The rest of the area was cleared of derelict buildings, significantly increasing the green space from the previous 138,000 m2 to 208,000 m2. The Merinos Park, thus rejuvenated, is an unexpected recreational space that has been serving the people of Bursa since 2008. The new Atatürk Opera and Concert Hall, situated next to the Merinos Culture Center, has been designed as a high-technology complementary element within the whole complex and houses a 1,650-seat Opera Hall, an 850-seat auditorium, a smaller 400-seat concert hall, and a 1,000 person capacity ballroom.Today, the Atatürk Culture Center and Merinos Park is an important, centrally located recreational complex that fulfills an important socio-cultural role for the city of Bursa.
