Gray Puksand completed the design for the Somerville Secondary College Technical Education + Trade Training Centre located in Melbourne, Australia.
This new single-level training centre at Somerville Secondary School is a multi-purpose facility designed for a number of schools on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula. Designed to create a new ‘face’ to the existing school grounds, while still maintaining a strong connection to the secondary college, the Technical Education and Trade Training Centre is both honestly expressed in its use of materials and in articulating functions within: two main workshop areas flanking the building with learning spaces located at the hub. To engage with students and create curiosity about the broad range of disciplines available, Gray Puksand used an abundance of glass to allow for transparency. Designed to accommodate up to 225 students at any one time, this facility is gender neutral, not often seen with training centres that include building and construction disciplines. Far from being dusty and raw, it offers light-filled and well-ventilated spaces that inspire those learning a trade.
