The pavilion is a new cultural hotspot of the Kaunas Picture Gallery in Lithuania and the first space in Kaunas city entirely dedicated to outdoor exhibitions, performance art and other cultural activities. It takes shape from the existing gallery, but offers a radically different experience – it is open to public 24/7, translucent, flexible and can quickly transform to suit any desired function. Stainless steel curtains and interior elements can be raised or lowered to clear or divide the space and create configurations both for traditional exhibitions and contemporary performances.

The project was designed in a location of the abandoned pool. The former presence of the water inspired the introduction of the dynamic elements – curtains. The reflectivity of the water suggested main material – shiny stainless-steel mesh. This helped to reinterpret the original composition of the site of the Kaunas Picture Gallery with a new volume and new materials.

By raising new mesh floors of the pavilion to align with the top of the pool we allowed easy access inside and provided a glimpse to a pool below. Elevated floors, transparent roof and mesh walls create a complete 360-degree depth and light experience. Nothing in this object feels heavy.

Interior partitions are created from the same stainless-steel mesh and can be elevated above the head using a most basic weight balanced mechanics. By lowering, raising these partitions it is possible to easily and quickly create different exhibition and performance scenarios. Up to this day, pavilion has hosted sound, dance performances, workshops and art exhibitions.
