A derelict barn dating back from 1860 and used for the last 150 years as a grain store has now been converted into an elegant and timeless 4 bedroom family house and work studio.

Sensitivity to the locality and to the existing framework of the building formed a delicate brief between new architecture and old history. A new building was slid into the extrusion of the existing space, respecting the frame and roof of the original barn. A vast fully triple glazed gable end with a panoramic view of the local countryside forms the end point of a journey through an open plan 250 sq. m ground floor space. Cut-outs up to the upper level form triple height spaces of living and entertaining areas. Centralised air, vacuum, security, data and lighting control enhance the use of spaces. Natural and organic materials were used wherever possible.
