DesignInc completed the Holy Family Catholic School Curiosity Building for exploration and creativity in Adelaide, Australia.
‘Curiosity’—a new learning hub at Holy Family Catholic School—is a multi-purpose educational facility at the heart of the campus. More than a repository of books and resources, it provides forum, storytelling, and maker spaces that connect to outdoor learning areas.
The building itself is a learning tool with the tectonics of the structure and services displayed for the students to see. With an emphasis on sustainable design principles, it features timber selected from sustainable sources, natural ventilation, rainwater capture, and solar-generated power.
The earthy and industrial palette of natural timbers, raw fibre cement cladding and deep earthy reds reflect the Holy Family Catholic School brand. The design theme of a flowing river takes inspiration from the school’s passion for sustainability and their work to breed an endangered native fish. The Southern Purple-spotted Gudgeon appears on windows and doors throughout the facility along with other wetland flora and fauna. The flowing, visual narrative links the diverse spaces available to the students, encouraging them to explore and investigate independently.
