Make’s world-class headquarters for financial services firm UBS has raised the bar for office and workplace design. Working with developer British Land, the 13-storey ‘groundscraper’ is a functional and pragmatic response to UBS’s detailed requirements and allows them to consolidate their London workforce for the first time. The ambitious, visually innovative building represents a powerful vote of confidence in the City and has become a catalyst for further regeneration of the Broadgate area.

The bold design is based on the form of a perfectly machined metal object that expresses the building’s internal functions. This solidity and robustness is rigorously carried through to the detailing, materiality and finishes, creating a new architectural language of quality and precision. The exclusive use of stainless steel on the main facade reinforces the design concept by unifying the surface of the building, giving it a strong presence reflecting its bespoke nature and single occupier. An ultra-rational arrangement of the structure and cores provides four large trading floors that can accommodate up to 3,000 desks, plus seven levels of offices.

Awarded BREEAM Excellent at the design stage, 5 Broadgate’s exceptionally sustainable facade treatment was extensively researched and conceived to balance natural daylight and views with high levels of thermal and solar insulation. Careful consideration has been given to the integration of the building with the surrounding area; new and improved pedestrian links at ground level have enhanced connectivity and flow around the site, while landscaping and specially commissioned public artworks are reinvigorating Broadgate’s public spaces.
