Although dogs are typically not allowed in New York State Parks within New York City, the State agency and MNLA worked closely with the local community to design and construct a new dog run at East River State Park with local funding. The entrance to the new dog run is within the adjacent Bushwick Inlet Park, which is owned and managed by the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation. This connection builds on the synergistic relationship of these neighboring waterfront parks and fills a key need for the large number of dog owners in this rapidly growing neighborhood.
Overhead structures provide valuable shade for seating areas until the canopy trees mature. Large boulders for dogs to play on and native plantings at the perimeter of the fence connect the dog run to other elements in the surrounding riverfront park. The pea gravel used in the run allows stormwater to infiltrate onsite, reducing negative impacts to the East River. And, as the plantings mature, they will provide increased habitat for pollinators and migratory birds.
