Meaningless Arch: We wanted to create furniture using an architectural approach, combining lightness and grave, beauty and accurate. As a result, we made a 4-meter-long table and a three-legged chair by industrial bamboo. The main challenge for the table was ensuring stability over a large span, while for the chair, it was maintaining balance with three legs. Perhaps we had forgotten that stability and balance are the essence of both tables and chairs, making innovation in their design a difficult task. In the end, the table floats above the wheat field like a piece of paper, undisturbed by the wind blowing through the waves of wheat. The chair, seemingly casual, stands firmly among the piles of rocks, resembling a sculpture. Therefore, they are named the “Rippleless Table” and the “Meaningless Chair.”

Rippleless Table
The Rippleless Table is made of steel and bamboo, with inclined steel elements acting as levers to counteract gravity and gently lift the tabletop. This design is reminiscent of the inclined supports seen in traditional Chinese architecture, where minimal materials are used yet play a crucial role in the overall structural form.

Modern technology has transformed the original bamboo into industrial bamboo, greatly improving its physical properties. Therefore, the cross-sections of the table components are small but sufficient to provide support. The Rippleless Table is also a furniture piece that is easy to disassemble and assemble. It is primarily connected using bolts, with some parts having mortise and tenon joints. All components interlock and fit together, forming a stable whole.

Due to its three legs, the Meaningless Chair can adapt to uneven terrain. It is also made of bamboo and steel, with the inclined steel acting like a lever to resist gravity and support the chair. This design is similar to the inclined brackets in ancient Chinese architecture, which are an important structural element.

The Rippleless Table and Meaningless Chair are part of the Furniture Series of Meaningless Arch. I prefer to refer to them as architectural pieces.
The Rippleless Table in the prototype stage The Rippleless Table, a work by LIN Architects, is a particularly special design that borrows elements from traditional Chinese material culture – slate. Starting out with the>() relationship between the activity of kiln-firing and the form of the kiln, it explores the curving performance of slate when it meets extremely high temperatures. The table also highlights the delicate nature of slate. Due to its heterogeneous and stratified characteristics, slate is prone to cracking when it is highly curved. This explains why slate architecture is always linear and flat. This particular side table is made from green slate that has been sourced from quarries in southern Fujian. The tabletop and legs are composed of different stone slabs that are meticulously attached together, and the legs of the table feature a linear texture of natural fissures. A sole leather strap protrudes from the surface of the table, serving as an unconventional decoration that evokes the image of something hanging from the top of a cave. Leather straps like these are commonly found in traditional tea houses in southern Fujian, where they are used to tie up roast ducks before being cooked. They have been casually left behind by butchers, and are now reintroduced to us through this design. The texture of slate and the linear pattern on the tabletop communicate with each other, and the elegance and tenderness of the material are enhanced by the play of volume and the unique protrusion. The legs of the table are gently curved, inviting users to get a closer look. The form of the table is highly versatile, and it can be used in a number of settings including lobbies, dining rooms, lounge areas, office spaces, and retail stores. Moreover, the Rippleless Table explores the relationship between form and activity. The design attempts to incorporate traditional craftsmanship into modern design by rejuvenating traditional techniques and giving them new functions. By highlighting the qualities of slate and its production process, it showcases the advantages of local materials and traditional production methods. This allows the local culture to continuously evolve in a contemporary context. Finally, the Rippleless Table represents the spirit of contemporary Chinese design. It embodies elements of traditional Chinese culture while showcasing innovation and a modern aesthetic. The table not only pays homage to the past but also looks towards the future, contributing to the development of contemporary design in China.
