Martin Brudnizki Design Studio is delighted to announce the redesign of Café Boulud, a classic mid-century brasserie with a contemporary twist. Located in the Four Seasons Toronto, the new interior displays a modernist playfulness yet feels comfortably current as a warm palette and fun furnishings match the elegance and sophistication synonymous with the hotel it occupies, alongside Daniel Boulud’s world-famous cuisine.

Martin Brudnizki says: “There is something strong yet simple about mid-century design that creates harmony in an interior and we wanted to build on this balance with Café Boulud. The chairs share a 1950’s shape but are upholstered in ruched leather, the walls finished in walnut work beautifully with the Hermès wallpaper. The end result is an abstraction of mid-century design principles, as each element evokes the period but takes on a contemporary element, to ensure the interior exudes an elevated sense of intrigue and quality.” The design is inspired by the finest craftsmanship of the modern era, from the stylish ruched leather chairs in opulent oxblood, to the ribbed banquettes upholstered in either tan leather complete with tweed detailing or Jaguar green leather.

While further accents of color can be found in the corner tables, made from an emerald green lava stone.

The walls share a similar design language, as a walnut frame with bull nose detailing borders a high-gloss green lacquer panel below and Hermes wall covering in a blue herringbone pattern sits above displaying an illustrative and handcrafted quality. Accompanying the walls, the contemporary art selection is sleek yet simple; covering a wide range of media, the art shares a common motif and features different depictions of food, utensils and nature.

The mood across the room will showcase an intimate and seductive charm, as the restaurant is gently illuminated with a line of 14 bespoke double globe pendant lights down its middle. These statement lights take inspiration from mid-century design maestro, Angelo Lelli, in the spherical shape, weightless structure and brass detailing and together with the brass and glass oval wall sconces, add to the relaxed glamour on offer at Café Boulud.

Creating a focal point and a new addition to the restaurant is the elegant dining counter. Constructed from wooden panels painted in a high gloss green lacquer, topped in white Calacatta marble and featuring a bronze and glass gantry; the dining counter offers an informal option for guests to enjoy small plates and coffee - all while sitting on one of the eight oxblood leather bar stools.

A further addition to the new interior can be found in the intimate lounge area, where, on entering Café Boulud, guests are greeted with an eclectic and comfortable range of armchairs, sofas and ottomans laid out across a large colorful rug and furnished to ensure they feel relaxed before going on to dine. The menu has been created by Chef Daniel Boulud and Chef de Cuisine Sylvain Assié and is grounded in traditional French cooking, while also features international influences. It includes a rotisserie and wide seafood selection as well as Bouillion Pho and Sea Bass Catalane.
