调皮的光柱打破黑夜的沉寂,在夜空里来回晃荡。
那一刻,你觉得快乐就是这么简单。
时光流逝,日新月异。霓虹闪烁之下的我们或许早就忘了记忆里那纯真快乐的自己。

Memories back to my particolored childhood
Oh—the age of innocence
As a post-80s, you may have the same experience. As night falls, one may wield the flashlight to his heart content.
Then naughty light beams, swing back and forth, break the silence of the night.
At that moment, the joy is so simple for you.
However, time rolls on, things are changing constantly. Under flashing neon, we may have forgotten the old innocent and joyful youth.

重庆南川东街,是南川人心中经典的时代记忆。熙攘拥挤,烟火蒸腾,连街热闹的商铺,惯耳熟悉的叫卖,构成了记忆中“市井万千”般的鲜活东街,东街也承载了太多的情感记忆。在城市化的今天,老旧的东街和人们似乎渐行渐远,或许它只是在等待下一次的苏醒。
2019年3月,南川区开始实施东街保护开发计划,按照“修旧如旧”的原则,在保持东街原有空间肌理的基础上,打造国内首个以平凡人原真生活文化为核心的文旅综合体验项目。作为东街二期艺术装置的创作团队,唤醒空间决定打造一组具有情感互动的户外参与艺术装置。

For natives, East Street in Nanchuan district of Sichuan province is a classic place to remember as it carries loads of their old memories. Hustle and bustle, this place is thronged with boisterous shops and catchy street cries. All those lent the street a certain vividness in people’s hearts. Thus, the marketplace really bears too much emotions. But today, it seems that the shabby street is fading away, or it is waiting for the resurrection.
In March 2019, the protection and development plan was put into practice in Nanchuan district. According to the principle of “restoring the old as the old”, this plan aims to forge the first comprehensive cultural and travel project in China with common people’s real life as its core based on its original layout. Space Wake Up, the design agency undertook the design work of this project’s second stage, decided to build an artistic installation outdoors to promote the affective interaction between people and the environment.

如何在纷繁的记忆中探寻那段时光?我们想到了童年用手电筒探寻黑夜的经历。
「拾光万花筒」就是我们关于南川东街生活记忆的灵光。复古的老式手电筒作为装置外型,经过成倍放大之后,电筒内自然形成了可供停留的纵向空间。六块镜面不锈钢构成的内部空间,形成了光影往来间奇妙的折射关系。电筒内部尽头,以高清LED显示板封底。荧幕无穷变换的万花筒纹样,在镜面的折射下,形成无尽变换的斑斓色彩。纵深的内部空间,有较强的方向引导性。

How to reappear those happy days buried deeply in our thoughts? We alighted by the experience—adventuring in the dark with flashlight in our childhood.
Light Kaleidoscope is the miraculous brightness that reminds us of the life fragments in this street. The building’s shape is made after the old-fashioned flashlight. Being doubly magnified, the building’s interior develops a vertical space for stay naturally. Decorated with 6 pieces of stainless steel mirrors, the inside provides a magical reflection of light and shade. There is a high-definition LED screen as the back cover in the end of this “flashlight”. Aided by the mirrors’ reflection, the kaleidoscope pattern shows a relentlessly changing colors. Besides, the deep and vertical space can serve as a good direction guide.

我们通过对内部空间尺度的把握,尽力摒除了“甬道式”空间多见的压迫和局促,转而形成的是如儿时缤纷簇拥的梦境幻想和昔日环抱的温暖体验。像电筒用光亮赋予了黑夜方向,亦是记忆碎片在沉默中凝结、重组,让人百感交集。
After grasping the structure of the internal space, we managed to avoid the oppressed and cramped feeling brought by the “corridor” pattern, but to present a kind of warm feeling as if one is crowded by colorful dreams in childhood. On the one hand, flashlight points out the direction for us in the dark night, on the other hand, our memory fragments congealed and recombined. By this way, all kinds of feelings well up in one’s heart.

我们希望,用承载众多生活记忆的手电筒,点亮沉睡中那曾经烟火十足的东街,也点亮属于南川人纯真快乐的生活。这种“情感化设计”,是唤醒空间对南川东街户外艺术装置的情感体现也是量身设计。“情感化设计”这个词最早出自于美国认知心理学家唐纳德·诺曼的同名著作《情感化设计》。
There is our hope to reinvigorate the East Street which was used to be busy but now is quite and lead people back to their happy life with Light kaleidoscope, a building that symbols those old days. This kind of tailored “emotional design” embodies the affection of the design company for East Street. “Emotional design” was first put forward by American cognitive psychologists Donald Arthur Norman in his work Emotional Design.

诺曼认为设计有三个层次:本能——行为——反思。情感是人特有的本质,在某些程度上与逻辑和理性是站在对立面的。当代表着标准生产的“工业化产物”(城市的发展和更新)拥有了情感和情绪,会更加容易受到人的青睐。
In Norman’s mind, design includes three stages: instinct, behavior then reflection. Emotion is the peculiar feature of human, which means it sometimes stands against reason and logic. Therefore, if we attach emotion and mood to city and its development and update—the product of industrialization that represents the standardized production, it will more easily get popular.

“拾光万花筒”从城市发展的记忆中拾取逐渐远离的儿时情感经历,当参与者真正走进这个曾经熟悉的“记忆符号”之中时,它又用另一种沉浸式的空间形式,将人们带到具有极强感染力的情感空间中,从记忆到空间沉浸式感受,从而转化成心理的情感认同,情感化设计在“拾光万花筒”中得到很好的诠释。同样的设计理念唤醒空间还完成了录音机酒吧、时光BP机、时空大哥大等视觉艺术互动装置。城市的发展和社会的进步基于逻辑和理性,而当城市发展的进程过于迅速而淡化了社会中人的情感需求时,我们认为:“情感化的设计或许是我们当代城市更新进程中的一剂良方。
Light Kaleidoscope helps people pick up yesterday’s emotional pieces from memories of urban development. When a person gets involved in the familiar “mnemonic symbol”, Light Kaleidoscope throws people into a contagious emotional space depends on its immersion space design. From memory to space, from physical experience to mental experience, the affective commitment is completed, which fully shows the idea of emotional design. Besides, visual art interactive devices like Recorder Bar, Bp Phone, Palm Phone and so on also follow this philosophy. The engine of urban development and social progress is logic and reason. Whereas, as we noticed the fading human’s emotional needs due to the too fast pace of city development, it comes to us that emotional design is maybe an effective solution to this problem during city updating process.
