Soft, natural textures of cork, limewash paint, heavy linen draped arches and recycled timbers in our pop-up retail fit out for Peninsula Hot Springs. Located on the beach front of Rye, we created this sandy, sensory experience to connect to the site – while referencing the natural textures of the award winning bathing facility.
As a phased concept, the pop up shop was Stage 1, offering a separate, accessible gift voucher and retail hub to their main location, before the Stage 2 plans of this becoming the reception to a large wellness activity centre. The store opened just a few months before the 2020 COVID lockdowns across Victoria, and unfortunately put stage 2 on hold indefinitely.
For this project, we opted for a similar earthen material palette that we used at the hot springs, while also introducing other natural textures that lend themselves better in a dryer setting. We selected cork floor tiles from Eco Cork, that we also used to line the walls of the changing rooms. The change rooms feature heavy Belgian eco-linen from Ink and Spindle in a similar oatmeal colour that reflect the tones of the walls.
All the other walls of the space used Bauwerk’s limewash paint in ‘sandstone’, the paint adding a layer of texture and dimension to the otherwise flat walls.
Using recycled messmate, we created functional joinery for the retail shelving and shop desk. The shelving needed to be adjustable, to be flexible with ever changing stock, so we designed a more structurally sound peg and hole system, by turning the ends of the ends of the dowels to allow them to securely screw in.
The shop desk uses recycled messmate for the countertop, with Tasmanian oak mouldings around the base. We created divided drawers for the custom etched wood gift cards and our custom rusted steel brochure holders that we made in all shapes and sizes.
