Polish-based architectural studio Medusa Group set-up two bold projects in the young post-industrial city Katowice, Poland. Both of them tear off the tag of Polish-Detroit effect. The .KTW office buildings and the First District residential area, giving a leaven to the new city-center, have just been awarded by international audience.Without a clearly urban-defined center, based on industry and hard human work Katowice was facing the same fears as many post-industrial cities worldwide. Fortunately today, thanks to commitment of the new age Polish architects such as Przemo Łukasik from Medusa Group, the city is being born new in modern reality now.
New cultural buildings have been erected in the recent years in Katowice as an idea called Culture Zone. A revitalized space covering the area of the former ’Katowice’ coal mine – the Museum of Silesia, the Polish Radio National Symphonic Orchestra and the International Congress Centre. All of them are composed of cuboids, gradually getting higher. Medusa Group wrote the additional chapters to this new hot city story. – We decided to use it as one of the design inspirations in preparing the towers concept – says Przemo Łukasik, who lives his whole life here. The new set-up buildings were supposed to complement the cultural functions of the place.

.KTW office buildings complex is the highest in the capital of the Upper Silesia becomes one of the signs of the economic energy of Katowice. Architects wanted the towers to complement the unique Katowice Culture Zone with its missing business component. .KTW office buildings, towering over the panorama of the city, become a gateway to this space, give it a metropolitan character and symbolize a good place for development.

We have created architecture reserved in its form. We have added the new towers features that enabled a representation of the character we perceive in Silesia. The buildings are simple and easily streamlined with the surroundings, but at the same time they do not lack sparkle, energy and dynamics. We have touched them, displacing the modules against each other and giving them an individual architectural form. We balance at the limits of the classical understanding of composition, which emphasises the stage of transformation Katowice has been undergoing – says Przemo Łukasik, the co-owner od Medusa Group studio, based in Bytom, Silesia. .KTW buildings combine the office machine with elegant, timeless architecture, the strength of which lies in modesty. As said by Albert Einstein: ‘Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler.’

First District
The First Districtenriches the Culture Zone with such an important element as people. The zone lacked a human factor. It used to be alive only when conferences, sports events, concerts or exhibitions were held. The area was empty on usual days. The designers have been convinced that the space may offer much more, apart from holding events, so they decided to enliven it.

The First District was created in the heart of Katowice, at Góreckiego Street, on site of the former ‘Katowice’ coal mine, where the city started to develop. This post-industrial area, after the excavation works stopped, is a direct buffer between the existing Bogucice residential district and the Culture Zone. The housing complex as a whole was to create a new space open to the surroundings.

At the same time Medusa Group had the ambition to make a design which is exceptional at over-regional scale and presents world-class architecture. The objective of the design was also to limit the gross covered area to provide as much green space as possible. Thus, the First District has commenced the process of accustoming its own industrial heritage of the region and the newly developed space is now available to the residents.
