Designed by Marta Milà Pascual & Marc Torrellas Arnedo Years of exhibition: 2018, 2019

The visitor is invited to walk through the cornfield maze, along the path or between the plants, discovering the three playscapes. aMAIZEing is a garden that emphasizes three main aspects of playing: shapes, movement and change. Shapes are simple. The rectangle plot confines a dense crop field defined by a perfect grid made of corn.

The gaps in the vegetation form three circles inside the crop mass which also contain three playful circular objects providing spaces for different groups and ages. Movement is key when playing. Outdoor activities in natural settings invite discovery. When we are children, by playing we are able to learn the boundaries of our motor skills while having fun. And as adults we can return to our childhood for a while.

Playing we activate our physical motion by sitting, walking, running, climbing, jumping, crawling, stretching or squatting, but also our social expression and our creativity, interacting, sharing, learning, imagining and inventing. Changes are necessary to be adaptive. Unlike inert elements, natural elements have the ability to change. During its period of growth, the garden changes height and colour, becoming a dynamic playspace which provides different perceptions of the same elements: a garden to be ‘amaized’!

Assemble

Designed by Katie Strang, Christine Dewancker, Craig Van Ravens Years of exhibition: 2018, 2019

Assemble is a participatory piece that encourages the discovery of material and place, while also being able to stand alone as an abstract sculpture in response to the wooded environment. The piece is comprised of six fixed base structures and loose, movable stick components.

Participants are invited to find and gather the small wooden stick objects and assemble them onto the base structures to form bush huts. Each hut will be made from real branches, sanded, sealed and painted in a monochrome bright colour.

The colours of the individual branches and sticks will stand out among the forest, the organic shapes contrasting with the bright luminous colours of the paint. Each branch becomes an object in itself, beautiful for its natural form; together, these pieces create an organic and abstract structure that is both inviting, familiar and striking within the landscape.

Carousel

Designed by ISO Years of exhibition: 2018, 2019

Reinterprets a classic typology found in playgrounds, the merry-go-round. This simple installation evokes memories of motion in landscape and landscape in motion. The experience is presented in the form of an endless loop. The depth of the forest is left aside, almost forgotten; the immediate context of surrounding trees and vegetation prevail, taking on a more intimate relationship with the visitor.

From a distance, the handle bars blend with the ensemble of trees but on approaching the installation, the visitor can find something familiar, yet singular, displaced in a much more immersive setting. The proposal encourages a rapprochement between users and their immediate environment, defining a place within the expansive forest. The renewal of the art of the garden is here expressed in the tension between static and interactive, recognizable and unique, intimate and vast.

Courtesy of Nature

Designed by Johan Selbing, Anouk Vogel Years of exhibition: 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019

“Courtesy of Nature”

Courtesy of Nature is a contextual installation that invites the visitor to reflect upon our relation to nature. Is nature something to cherish? To protect? To tame? To exploit? What if instead of designing the content we solely concentrated on designing the container? Instead of creating a new object to be placed on existing exhibition grounds, an exhibition space is designed around existing elements.

Could, by doing so, a new light be projected on what belongs to the local environment, making the seemingly banal appear extraordinary? The museum is, after all, a place conceived for seeing. The local context is not altered, but part of it is temporarily isolated in order to create an indoor vegetal isle evoking an art work.

On entering this volume you would logically expect to find yourself indoors. All the more surprising then when that indoors turns out to illustrate a portion of the outdoors. This tranquil space alludes to a museum room where landscape has become interior, its dimension tamed by architectural means.

Forêt

Designed by Ronan Virondaud, Mathilde Leveau Years of exhibition: 2019

The place is bathed in dim light. The rays of light draw lines in space, crossing the particles of water in suspension to land on the ground. The feet of visitors look for support on the soft ground that bounces slightly underfoot. The smell of humus is strong. Sometimes the rain sings on the roof of this enveloping world.

Through a vertical reading of the space, the installation highlights the essence of a wooded environment. The pierced canvas allows some sun rays to filter through. They become visible in the fine haze that disperse jets at regular intervals. In this favourable environment, life awakens in the substratum lining the ground. In the shadows, the senses of visitors awaken.

The experience of the garden happens here beyond the garden. It is an immersive space in which darkness magnifies the light. Forêt is a staging, a strange and unexpected circus. Forêt is an enclosed environment of dreams and of the imagination, a space that opens in our head. Forêt is the idea of the forest: the forest in the absolute.

I like to move it

Designed by DIX NEUF CENT QUATRE VINGT SIX Architecture Years of exhibition: 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019

In this garden, the visitor will face a seemingly wild meadow. Grasses and a few birch trees grow together against the backdrop of dense greenery. There seems to be little going on here. But the straight lines at ground level, punctuating the space, create a rhythm and attract the visitor’s attention.

On approaching one turns around, scans, wonders and finally touches. That is when the trees begin to move. Visitors can slide the trees along their tracks and create their own garden. The banal becomes strange. Nature domesticated transforms the landscape into a garden. Trees, immobile and mute, are rootless and move as living beings. All due to human interaction.
