GALERIA VASCO DA GAMA 26 is situated in the fishing village of Ferragudo, Algarve, Southern Portugal. The historic center of Ferragudo is an extremely sensitive area to work. The studio had the pleasure to renovate one of the untouched buildings in Rua Vasco da Gama, one of the main streets in the village. A particular aspect of this building is the connection to the quayside through a long and narrow corridor, a space formerly used as a repair shop for boats. The two storey building was a former warehouse for boats on the ground floor and an adult school on the first floor. The building was totally dilapidated but still it had all the original features. The clients brief was the preservation of this historic building, which for many years was a desired project to the studio. On the entire ground floor – which benefits from the two entrances – was created a gallery which is open to the public. The upper floor was transformed into an apartment that benefits from a roof terrace created above the long room.
