The multimedia library in the Lucien Rose neighborhood in Rennes gently blends into the site, and the 81 public housing units consists of six buildings, of which three plots are fashioned as large houses along an interior street. This complex abuts the Thabor Botanical Gardens and presents a facade of wooden planks to conceal the housing while preserving broad views of the landscape.
Located at the entrance to the site, the Lucien Rose multimedia library is embedded in the natural slope of the terrain. It has a terraced planted roof, and it is illuminated by five dense, chiseled openings along its metal ceiling that evenly distribute the natural light. Simplicity and rationality dominate the interior ; the furniture designed by the firm is functional for adults and playful for children.
The space is ample and it reframes daily movements through a city where users of the park and of the multimedia library as well as local and nearby residents cross paths and live alongside one another. The landscaped layout opens up onto the park and constitutes the signature aspect that helps one reconsider the way in which urban design, building and landscape are gently blended together. The project inserts itself carefully into the preexisting urban texture, a mesh of well-to-do villas, a historic high school building, and a famous park. It is precise in terms of its scale, size, materials, and tones.
