Conventional movie theaters, after over 18 years of intensive use, are obsolete and worn out. With the intention that the loyal customer values the effort of updating the cinemas, work is being done on the epidermal layer of the rooms, creating a pilot room that will serve as a model for the refurbishment of the following ones.

We work with green, something very unusual in cinemas, contrasting its elegance with the lines of linear lighting that could refer to more futuristic scenarios. It is in these contrasts, working with unique elements such as acoustics and lighting, the change of pavement or the definition of railings, where the room completely changes its appearance to look new and, at the same time, to be able to look at it 15 years from now, without the feeling of having become obsolete, looking for timelessness.

With the increase of television offerings through digital platforms, the aim is to attract the viewer by proposing an immersive experience, adapting one of the rooms to 4Dx technology.
Wanting to make “going to the movies” a total experience, the refurbishment plays with kinetics and contrasts in the succession of spaces. From the lobby, a ray of light invites you to advance in the volume of access to the room, pointing to the corner of the screen, visible at the end, as an abstract surface. The uniqueness of the access is accentuated by the enveloping use of the carpet. As he leaves, a half turn of the spectator confronts him with the impressive volume of the room and places him in front of a dynamic space, preparing him for the projection. And for the attraction.

After the first 4Dx room in Catalunya’s great success in terms of public, Filmax Gran Via 2 cinemas decide to double the stakes and adapt a new room, this time with 112 seats – 28 more than in the previous one.
Despite the property’s desire to unify the appearance with its predecessor, the conditions of accessibility and evacuation – given the increase in seats over 100 –, require a double lateral access and, therefore, two staircases.
The fact of meeting these demands is also used to generate a narrow, high-rise access corridor than, when turning, it opens towards the room, framed by two staircases. These are presided by a Scarpian wink which contains the 3D glasses cabinet under the first alveolar concrete plate that supports the stands. All this staging is accompanied by a velvety maroon carpet that covers everything.

As well as in previous interventions, Filmax Cinemas are following their path of innovation and exploration of immersive experiences. In this case, it is the Screen X technology, which aims to convert conventional rooms into rooms with an experience of 270º.
Architecturally, two decisions are made: First of all, the demolition of the two access and exit ramps, and the partition that forms the flat access to the stands, to accentuate the feeling of attraction in the spectator, seeing the stands higher and more present, like an independent volume inside the room.
The second decision is the adaptation of the side screens’ geometries and other elements that define the space to the modular shape of the piece that serves as the screen, and at the same time acts as an acoustic absorber. This decision generates steps that occupy both sides and change the design of a theatre with a screen, in order to have a screen with a theatre. The wall coverings, made of black lacquered microperforated mini-wave sheet, help with the acoustics and bring an air of a certain futurism to a space that wants to convey innovation, so as to be able to compete with everything digital platforms have to offer.
