Doubling as a giant billboard and storefront, the OKIO eyewear boutique in Guatemala City features an eye-catching façade shaped like a pair of cat’s eye glasses. The giant, circular windows with oxidized iron frames takes the stores products as literal inspiration and making clear its usage to the street nearby, giving the impression almost of a sculptural art installation. This playful treatment of the exterior is also functional, bringing in natural light to the interior and allowing outsiders passing by to window shop. Throughout this eighty square meter store—which contains a retail area, exam room, restrooms and storage—this playful geometry is carried out. A large ‘oculus’ skylight brightens up the interior and well placed mirrors of different various shapes and sizes reflect the large circular openings in the ceiling and façade. This brings a bold interplay of light and form to the interior of this small boutique. Inside, a custom display bar and cashier are positioned underneath the skylight at the center of the space. Interior details for the display of the merchandise are designed with simple wood verticals and adjustable metal shelves that highlights the colorful trendy eyewear. The warmth of the natural pinewood contrasts the cool white of the store’s walls. Forest-green cabinetry, the pastel-green terrazzo tiles and lush plants from the exterior garden create a soft, soothing backdrop of color and blend the project into its tropical environment.
