Before the Ming Dynasty, the Sanwan Section of the Canal (formerly known as Pagoda Bay) was straight and fast, which was not conducive to sailing. Later, under the leadership of Guo Guangfu, Magistrate of Yangzhou in the Ming Dynasty, the Canal was turned from straight to form three water bays, so as to get the name “Sanwan”. After liberation, Sanwan has gradually developed into an industrial zone in the south of Yangzhou, and it has gradually changed from an industrial zone to an ecological park from 2008 to 2017. In 2018, Sanwan was repositioned as the cultural and tourism core of southern Yangzhou. The development of the scenic spot ushered in new opportunities, but also demanded higher requirements, among which the waterfront space transformation has become a key step to improve the scenic spot.
The Sanwan Section of the canal has experienced four eras of development in history
The eastern waterfront space transformed by this project is the main entrance of the Sanwan Scenic Spot and the important interface of the Canal facing the city. It has an area of 3.71 hectares and a coastline of about 750 meters.

Site Status: Waterfront but not Water-Friendly, Visitors Cannot Interact with the Canal
方案Scheme
With the purpose of “Returning the River to the People” and the concept of “Picturesque Canal and Culture Hidden in Sanwan”, the transformation aims to create a model area for the transformation of Sanwan waterfront space.
General design plan
The design focuses on opening full waterfront interface with the strategy of “opening-introducing-connecting-embellishing”. Two theme spaces, “Canal living room” and “canal stage”, are introduced, and greenways and waterfront walkways are used to connect the internal and external traffic of the area, embellishing a number of characteristic nodes that are integrated with the canal.

Transformation Results
Waterfront Space That Returns the River to the People
Scene comparison before and after transformation of important nodes of the site
Canal Living Room: The original site space and traffic order of the east entrance was chaotic. In the transformation, part of the original trees on the axis that block the view were transplanted, and the original central meadow was completely opened to ensure the interconnection between the canal view and the axis of the square, and simplify the travel line.

Special combination of hackberries and meadow flower field makes landscape penetration of the canal but also creates an intermediate level
The plants on the revetment are reduced, the greenway recedes, and the waterfront interface forms a gentle slope
The water-friendly walkway system is combined with the revetment with gentle slope into the water
Canal Stage: A theme space facing the canal is formed by using the wave shadow gallery, the grass terrace and the canal background.
Aerial view of partial canal stage
The open canal stage, canal, wetland and dayun tower form a complete picture
Environmental Utilization according to the Conditions
The design properly retains and utilizes the current masson pine forest, metasequoia forest and weeping willow on the shore to maximize the value of the existing environment.
The three arbor belts retained in the transformation
Retention, nesting and replanting are adopted to strengthen the scene interaction between plants and canals
The greenway is integrated with the current metasequoia forest belt
Various Ecological Strategies
Before transformation, the shoreline was rigid and did not realize the due ecological benefits of the waterfront. It is designed to restore the water-friendliness and ecological diversity of the river bank through the treatment of the shoreline advance and retreat and the gentle slope wet plant belt. After maintaining a green land rate of 75%, permeable asphalt, embedded grass steps and aerial walkway are used to further reduce surface runoff.
Ecological revetment transformation ensures the water-friendliness and ecological diversity of the riverbank.
The natural revetment of the grassy slope into the water combines with the buffer zone of aquatic plants to ensure the hydrophilic and ecological diversity of the riverbank
The natural concave area is configured with wet plants to create a pebble flower stream
Details on Bank-River Interaction
The soft and hard interface, height differences interface and image facade of the site are used to express interesting details and strengthen the spatial perception of bank and river interaction.
Wavy curved benches and embedded grass steps echo the rhythm of the canal and the tower
The boundary of the planting pool uses a wavy soft and hard interlaced transition
Embedded grass steps and stepping stones allow plants to blend naturally with activity space
Ripple steps echo the boundary of the shoreline, and simultaneously realize the dual use of steps and benches
Muhlenbergia capillaris and steps are interspersed to form a bright seasonal landscape
The light wave shadow corridor and the stripped grass steps together create an activity space floating on the green space
Enclosed stand and canal stage are fully integrated with environment with transparent styles
