Stantec designed the new UPMC Pinnacle Memorial Campus as a teaching hospital to better support the community for generations to come in York, Pennsylvania.
The new 104 licensed-bed, 260,000-square-foot facility is accompanied by a 140,000-square-foot Ambulatory Care Building (ACB), offering a comprehensive range of health services on the new campus.
The six-story replacement hospital houses all the necessary support functions for a freestanding hospital, including acute and emergency medical care, cardiology and vascular services, maternity services, chronic disease management, surgical services, and treatment for patients in need of long-term care. Oncology services include an Infusion Center with rooftop garden, radiation oncology, and a Women’s Center for imaging and treatment.
Spanning five stories, the ACB provides a platform for numerous clinical specialties brings more visits to the campus and creates a more convenient patient experience. The building’s UPMC Leader Surgery Center includes eight operating rooms, dedicated sterile processing, and 27 prep/recovery positions. Other programs include various specialty practices, a sleep lab, cardiac rehabilitation gym, and conference center.
The building design reinforces a connection to nature with waiting areas that hug the exterior, inboard exam rooms, and design details that maximize the opportunity for borrowed light. Interiors draw a color palette of wood tones, natural stones, subtle textures, and patterns inspired by nature to create a warm and healing environment for patients.
Inspired by the region’s local quarries, the precast panels on the building’s exterior express the layers of limestone in the rock strata, while metal accents are a nod to the industrial heritage of York.
Located on more than 100 acres, the new hospital offers outdoor gardens and walking trails for patient respite and community use. The buildings sit atop a hill offering expansive landscape views for patients, staff, and visitors. The exterior design features a shared courtyard and roof garden.
