The planned area in Zheleznovodsk is a very good example of Soviet architecture of the 20th century.
The spa and amusement park are nestled in Zheleznaya Mountain, around which a network of paths and trails has been formed. Like a kind of patchwork quilt, the territory is adorned with sanatoriums that are in great demand throughout the country. In the distant 1930s, the prominent Soviet architect, Nikolay Papkov, designed a wonderful 400-meter-long staircase leading from the dense forest on the eastern slope of the mountain, to the upper thermal park. The construction of the Lower Staircase is an avant-garde addition to the architectural concept that had been developed in the 1930s.
According to the master plan, the cascading staircase connects the upper part of the spa park to the crystal clear lake. The design calls for a 600-meter-long stepped cascade decorated with bas-reliefs and fountains unparalleled in the world. The new staircases are equipped with observation platforms, rest areas, machine rooms, and spa baths. On the lower level, there is a bookstore cellar "Stoss", which marked the embodiment of a fantastic tale by the writer Mikhail Lermontov. It was not published due to the death of the great Russian poet.
The cantilevered viewpoint of the Iron Square, with an amphitheater, is complete and logically within the architectural ensemble of the staircase. The cascading staircase is the longest in southern Russia. The square is an interweaving of chemical formulas in the Zheleznovodsk mineral waters. Our project was carried out within the framework of the victory in the national competition of the Russian Federation for the best ideas and improvement projects in small towns and historical settlements in 2018, in the category of 20-50 thousand people.
The implementation of the project was recognized as one of the best experiences of the Ministry of Construction of Russia in 2019. The spatial strategy for the development of landscaping set out in the 2018 plan led to the development of the Kavminvodsky bicycle path project, which was supported by the Russian Government and financed in 2020 in the amount of 2.8 billion rubles. The implementation of the stairway extension project in the spa town of Zheleznovodsk has attracted about 5 billion rubles in investments for the development of the spa and hotel complex. This is a new system to systematically attract investment within the territory of Russia.
