There’s only one Gerald: Two year project sees 105 artists customise 120 paper dogs.
• Limited Edition Book and New York exhibition concludes ambitious two year, international collaborative paper sculpture project
• World’s leading image makers come together to customise hundreds of examples of Gerald the Lazerian Dog, an emerging design classic
• Gerald & James showcase reveals all artist-designed dogs to an international audience at New York Design Week 2013 in partnership with British bespoke paper-makers, James Cropper, one of the country’s oldest and most respected firms
More than 100 of the world’s most exciting and influential artists, illustrators and designers including Oliver Hibert, Tatiana Arocha, Insa, Stanley Chow, Kai and Sunny and Pete Fowler have taken a paper dog and made it their own as part of the two-year Gerald Project. Culminating in a book launch and exhibition taking place at New York Design Week, the collaborative sculpture exchange is one of the most ambitious in the history of art and design.
Here’s some more information from Gerald project:
Starting in 2011, hundreds of paper dogs have been shipped between the UK and artists’ studios in Europe, USA, Australia, Argentina, South Korea and New Zealand, with the only instruction to creatives being to put their own spin on the emerging design classic. Only now that all of the Geralds have been returned to their master, can the beautiful, bold and brash results be seen together for the first time.
Hungarian artist, Agnes Toth is one of the 105 collaborators, drawing from a project originally seen at Tate Britain to give Gerald a painted coat that explores art history and the artist’s escape from the confines of her studio. Banksy’s right hand man and former Head of Design for SEGA Europe, Inkie takes inspiration from the gaming industry and the tattoos adorning Mike Tyson’s face to create his unique dog, while textile specialist, Felt Mistress literally dresses her Gerald in a skin of 70 metres of felt strips, hand sewn in using over 150 yards of thread.
Further demonstrating the diversity of Gerald submissions, British illustrator, Tom Newell works in his trademark monochrome, using heavy pen strokes to cover Gerald in an intricate design partly inspired by a Captain Beefheart soundtrack. Pete Fowler, known for his World of Monsterism, gives his dog a wood grain finish and Los Angeles-based artist, Jimi Crayon emerges from a recent project to put his art in lights on Times Square to adorn Gerald in colourful, biological shapes resembling staring eyes and the animal’s real world inner workings. Like many artists, Crayon worked to decorate the flat components of Gerald before pulling the final design together in the final construction.
Liam Hopkins, who co-created Gerald alongside British 3D designer Richard Sweeney, said: “We created Gerald as a challenge to ourselves and to challenge paper as a material. It stood up to the test and became a blank canvas for us to start adding elements of colour and more intricate design.
“Putting Gerald out there for other creatives to customise seemed like an obvious thing to do, but the response has been overwhelming. Being able to count influential illustrators like Simon Spilsbury, Tim Lahan and Andy Smith as part of the project, plus multidisciplinary creatives like Nous Vous, Munye & Co, Goo For Brothers and Atelier Doodle has exceeded even our expectations for the project.”
Stood on four legs with his nose proudly pointed to the air, Gerald really is a dog like no other. The free standing model of a Bracco Italiano breed of gun dog made entirely of paper uses up to 88 individual components for each large format dog. His construction is a prime example great design giving strength and grace to the most unlikely and underappreciated of materials. Joining Lazerian to celebrate the completion of the project is James Cropper, the 170 year old British paper mill who will use their publishing experience to create a high quality, limited edition, large format hardback book featuring all 120 of the paper dogs alongside artist reflections on what the project and Gerald means to them.
The Gerald and James exhibition and book launch will take place during New York Design Week 2013 at 60 Reade, off Broadway between Thursday 16 – Sunday 19 May 2013. Housed in custom built steel and clear plastic dog kennels, the installation will offer 360 degree views of each Gerald, displaying them in all their glory. Available in kit form, limited edition prints of the artist-designed dogs will also be available to buy for Gerald fans to make their own versions at home.
Mark Cropper, Chairman of James Cropper, said: “When we heard about Gerald and the collaborative project to create hundreds of different designs it struck a chord with us. Lazerian are committed to exploring new and interesting uses for paper and Liam and his collaborators work to encourage creatives to consider working in new formats and materials themselves. As we have been adapting paper for nearly two centuries, often pushing it to its limits for print and packaging, we were only too pleased to support this intriguing creative project. The dogs and the book we have published on the project all use our highest quality papers and we have been delighted to bring Gerald and James together for a launch and exhibition in New York.”
Available from Lazerian via their website, the book will feature colour photography taken on location at the design studio in Manchester, UK and at James Cropper’s paper-mill in Burneside, UK by Simon Pantling of Pantling Studio. Layout and typography comes courtesy of Daren Newman, who also collaborates on a Gerald dog with a multi-coloured marble design achieved by dipping the components in wet paint.
