Launched on April 28th in Ziyue Plaza, Nanjing, Yuhua Pop-up Park is the city’s very first pop-up park doubling as an exhibition. Packed with seasonal plants, the maze-like park features not only many comfortable areas for citizens to rest and play but also a unique chance to learn about Nanjing’s fascinating native species. The park will stay at Ziyue Plaza (the sunken plaza near Gate E of Yiyuecheng Shopping Mall) for 30 days, after which it will be relocated to another location.

More than your regular pop-up park

This pop-up project was commissioned by Nanjing Yuhuatai Forestry and Agriculture Bureau and from the very beginning it was clear it was going to be much more than a regular pop-up park. The client’s vision was to create a dynamic, explorable space that could let visitors experience Nanjing native flora and fauna while also learning about it. So our research branched in two ways: on the one hand we began learning about Nanjing local plants and animals species, and on the other hand we began surveying the planned location: a large square on the right side of Andemen Avenue near Sam’s Club supermarket.

As usual, we had a very short time for research, so after casually interviewing a few passersby we experimented with a bird’s-eye observation method using short aerial videos taken every hour from morning to evening (courtesy of our amazing SUYI BIM team) during both weekdays and weekend. Careful study of the footage revealed not only people’s flows, but even specific activities: like kids chasing each other in the large square, not having anything else to play with, or teenagers doing rollerskating and many adults sitting in the sun nearby.

Overall, the conclusions from both interviews and observation were clear: this large empty square badly needed better facilities for kids to play, better seating and shade for people doing shopping and relatives keeping an eye on kids and, most importantly, something large and visible from afar, a sort of landmark that could attract people from all sides of the road to come and visit. That’s how the idea of enclosing part of the space in tall partitions came up. Balancing citizens’ needs with the client’s ambitious brief while complying with safety regulations, avoiding damage to the ground and keeping the budget low was no small feat and the design went through several rounds of adjustment and refinement ultimately leading to its final hexagonal steel prisms structure, which combines structural stability, scalability and modularity with a unique visual effect.

The Design: turning a forest into a public space

The design concept is inspired by a tall and dense forest, where one would wander freely and stumble upon all kinds of beautiful plants and animals. But instead of trying to emulate a real forest, the design abstracts it: trees and thick vegetation become the vertical lines of tall “sunboard” panels, arranged to create a bee-hive maze with different heights and multiple paths with surprise encounters at every turn, represented by huge posters of plants and animals, perfect as selfie-walls and printed on semi-transparent stickers so that they are visible from both in and out of the maze.

Each animal/plant poster features a bite-sized description of the species, highlighting key information and interesting facts. But it’s not all static: hidden within the maze is a projection room featuring videos of various maze animals (courtesy of Nanjing Hongshan Zoo), with soothing sounds of various natural soundscapes accompanying each species. Some posters also feature QR codes linking to articles with more gorgeous animal photography and videos.

In order to activate nearby public space, we surrounded the maze with patches of artificial grass with seats and shade in key locations along with spun chairs to entertain both adults and kids.

Scattered both in and out of the maze are several hexagonal planters filled with colorful seasonal plants that further enrich the atmosphere and provide a small bubble of clean air.

Finally, to further captivate the attention of passersby from a distance we positioned a close up portrait of the vampire deer (yes, turns out Nanjing is home to a deer with claws) and the very meme-friendly Asian small clawed otter at the respective entrances of the maze.

The Plot Twist

However, none of these things ever appeared in the large square near Sam’s Club. After finally perfecting the design, in an unexpected turn of events the original location that was carefully analyzed at the beginning of the project was scrapped and changed twice on short notice, giving us very little time to adapt the layout. Ironically, the final site was a much smaller and secluded sunken plaza in between the Yiyuecheng shopping mall west entrance, hotel-apartments and surrounding office buildings, including our own.

By conducting flash interviews with our own colleagues and people who were familiar with the site, we were able to quickly understand the new user types, flows and main activities and thus rapidly re-arrange the modules and optimize the layout of plants and furniture to ensure the best possible public life experience, both in and outside of the maze.

Observing nearby office workers behavior and interviewing "site experts", such as security guards and deliverymen

While in the initial location the primary users were shopping mall visitors, especially kids and their adult or elderly caretakers, in the final location the predominant user groups were young office workers passing through to get lunch or drinks, along with a few families occasionally coming out of the, rarely used, shopping mall west door. As a result, we decided to position one of the patio umbrellas, and attached table, close to the nearby milk tea shop and convenience store to provide a space for office workers to enjoy their drinks outdoor, while the other one was positioned near the “otter” entrance to attract office workers from afar and people exiting from the mall west entrance. Near both umbrellas we positioned the spun chairs in pairs so that people coming from both shopping mall or offices could have some silly fun together.

Until the very last day of construction we have been watching with curiosity how citizens reacted to the space, and did adjustments accordingly, such as providing more seating space inside the maze so that people could stay longer and have more time to soak in the nature. This approach paid off and we got several “early adopters” who visited the space when it wasn’t even finished yet.

Developing Nanjing’s first ever pop-up park + exhibition was certainly a bumpy ride, but despite all the unexpected problems, last minute changes and trims to the design, we always kept a human-centered design approach until the very end, and were finally able to turn the clients’ vision into a truly unique and attractive space.

A place where comfortable resting spaces and lush vegetation blend with playful exploration, bite-sized learning and the relaxing sounds of nature, with the ultimate goal of providing busy citizens with a rare opportunity to get out of their cubicles and do something different, enjoying public life together, while taking a moment to appreciate the amazing beauty of the local species of their own city.
