The Empório Santo Expedito was designed to house a restaurant, bar, taproom, bakery, and depot within the space of a shopping mall in the city of São José do Rio Preto, São Paulo, Brazil. The architectural design meant to build an environment that contrasted strongly with the impersonal and sober atmosphere of the mall. Using the store's own structures, such as the metal structure, air conditioning, exhaustion, electrical, hydraulic, and firefighting systems, all shown and used as the decor's own arguments. The mall's and the newly built structural pillars were covered in stone that, with the lighting project, managed to create a cozy atmosphere, including references to Roman cloisters, contemporaries of the time in which lived the soldier who later became a Catholic saint. It adds up with the atmosphere of Brazilian pubs, where products are hung and shown all around, like in Chelsea’s markets in New York.
