We renovated a 100-year-old Machiya, a house built in traditional way of construction unique to Kyoto. Instead of repairing the surface of a battered Machiya, we reviewed it from the fundamental structure. The design is based on Kyoto's traditional method of Wabi-Sabi and ”In Praise of Shadows”, which has been handed down from ancient times to the present day. The Wabi-sabi, method shows the old finishes on purpose. The “In Praise of Shadows” method reflects the design of the darkness. We regulate the amount of the light shine through the shadows. Although it faces a busy street, the space shifts into quiet darkness as you go deeper into the building. The architecture provides an opportunity for the guest to experience the traditional Kyoto style of living. In the future, it may return to a private residence, or it may be used for other purposes, but hopefully, it will remain for another 100 years to come.
