KEEP IT GLASSY
Imagine a world without glass. As the existence of glass is completely removed, when reflection, transparency are no longer available, what would our life be like? UN-GLASS presents a subversive view of a world without glass. Fourteen unique installations on display at the Shanghai Museum of Glass explore how the world would look like when glass is deliberately removed. The juxtaposition of glass’s presence and absence is visually communicated through the strong contrast of the indisputable black that replaces anything glass against the clean, white space. UN-GLASS, the fourth conceptual exhibition from
KEEP IT GLASSY
exhibition series, investigates various everyday scenarios where we take glass for granted and highlighting the omnipresence of glass through its absence.

The absence of glass is presented not only visually through blackness over anything glass, but also with interactive and multimedia installations, creating an immersive environment where visitors explore the world without glass from different perspectives. On each caption of the exhibits, a social media post from an imaginary visitor describe their experiences in the world without glass, adding a more intimate layer to the overall narrative. The unsettling feelings and scenarios derived from the absence of glass are visualised with the abrupt blackness in the clean bright space. UN-GLASS utilises hands-on installations as well as hand-made exhibits to juxtapose the utterly conceptual thought experiment with physical interactions and materials.

“
UN-GLASS is curated by Tilman Thürmer, Design Director of Shanghai Museum of Glass. He intends to reveal the omnipresence of glass, often taken for granted in daily life, with a rather radical approach – remove anything glass. “What can highlight the existence and importance of glass more than its absence? When we started this thought experiment, we realised that the impact of glass on us extends far more than its materiality. Glass altered how we perceive ourselves and others, as well as how we connect and experience. ” he said. “Through this subversive world without glass, our international team wants to invite visitors to alter their perspective and rethink about what glass means to them and to humans.”
8/9/10 | Installation: UN-SAFE

As an institute dedicated to unfold the limitless possibilities of glass, Shanghai Museum of Glass presents a subversive outlook of an obscure world without glass. UN-GLASS rips anything glass off from the fabric of reality and replace with patches of impenetrable pitch black, leaving everyone surrounded by uncannily unfamiliar scenarios in daily life. This is a rare opportunity to rediscover what is essential to us as human and our modern lifestyle.

“
It is hard to imagine a world without glass until it is deliberately removed, so are the features and the technological development derived from it. Without glass, several corner-stone technological innovations, such as the touchscreen for smartphone and tablet that constitutes the modern lifestyle would not be possible. In UN-SHARED, a colourless world is populated with indisputable black as a bold statement: how we instantly share experiences with smart phones and cameras is now nullified in the world without glass, for the screen would not exist. Whereas in UN-CONNECTED, the absence of fibre glass cables, how fast internet is transmitted, is replaced with with hand-sewn black threads on ten framed photographs of mundane street scenes in Shanghai. The works reveal the materiality of this digital layer of everyday life and how the connection we enjoy on the web is powered by something very much physical —glass.

When transparency is not available, we might find many familiar scenarios utterly changed. Un-SHOPPED reveals a bleak view of a shopping mall with windows cut out from the scene, questioning how the retail experience would be changed if there is never a window and how brands communicate with consumers in physical environments.
22/23/24 | Installation: UN-SHOPPED
25/26| Installation: UN-POLLUTED
Many activities would be impossible without the help of glass. With an interactive installation that simulates the roar of wind in a glassless car, UN-DRIVEN picture how our mobility would be restrained, and so would our ways of exchanging cultures and experiences. In UN-TRAVELLED, a fleet of blackened airplanes questions how we define the boundary of our world if fast long distance travel is not available.
27/28 | Installation: UN-TRAVELLED
“
If there is no reflection from the mirror, we would have even struggle to get ready. In UN-READY, one’s ability to define the appearance of his or her choice as well as the individual identity are put in question. Through the reflection of mirror, one becomes aware of the ability to change how him or her is perceived by others. Would the absence of mirror alter our perceived identity?

The impact and meanings that glass brought to humans have stretched far beyond its materiality. Glass changes the way we see the world and ourselves. This unique vision that goes both inwards and outwards has motivated us to reflect on ourselves as well as inspired us to explore the uncharted territories. Despite the new perspective granted by glass, we also learnt to use it to extend our thoughts and communicate ideas. UN-EXPLORED reminds visitor of how human, with glass, took a good look inward and outward, discovering an immense wondrous universe inside and out. Through a metaphorical telescope, the kaleidoscopic images condense many great leaps across millennia, inspiring visitors to contemplate on how civilisations have been propelled by exploration. In UN-FOCUSED, the desire to look deeper is materialised with a magnifying glass which is covered in black in the world with no glass. Perhaps if human had not been driven by curiosity to march into the uncharted territories, there would never been a single piece of glass in the world.
32/33/34/35/36 | Installation: UN-BUILT
The choice of materials for built environments in different times is the embodiment of the values spirit of the era, and the increasing use of glass in modern architecture has expressed our pursuit for transparency, openness and the innovation. UN-BUILT investigates the relationship between glass and architecture and how glass is used as a design choice to communicate contemporary values. Five iconic buildings that use glass as main material to bear the messages, including Louvre Pyramid, Reichstag and Apple Fifth Avenue, are etched on aluminium plates but the glass are replaced with patches of blackness.

破碎
BRKN

They say that it is the fate of glass to break. But as this new exhibition explores, breaking need not always be an act of destruction: it can also have positive connotations, and be a symbol of hope and new beginnings. Taking glass as its starting point, BRKN examines the fascinating cognitive divide between the physical and finite, and the enduring and conceptual. The third edition of exhibition series, ‘Keep it Glassy,’ BRKN invites visitors to take an alternative look at the world around them, and at glass in particular.

For Keep it Glassy 2, the conscious choice was made to focus on displaying concepts or projects, instead of mere objects in glass. The intriguing stories and smart strategies that hide beyond the surface of the design pieces show that designers make use of the specific traits of glass to shape their ideas for a better future. In the exhibition, four rooms highlight four different angles that can be taken when envisioning the future, through glass: Adornment, Sustainability, Innovation and Preservation.
