The principles of Zen Buddhism can cover all dimensions of life, and, for Chef Eric Ripert, that was the focus when designing his Sag Harbor home. Austerity, simplicity, naturalness, subtlety, imperfection, originality, and stillness—those were the concepts the French culinary force presented to architect Blaze Makoid for his new home’s design. Considering Ripert has been seriously practicing Zen Buddhism since the mid 1990s, it was only natural for him to easily have this top of mind.
Ripert's challenge was to build a monastery, but he didn't want his wife to know she was living in a monastery. He wanted her to think it was a beautiful and luxurious house, which meant building a bridge between what they both wanted: a temple and a monastery. Fortunately, Riperts were able to find the perfect team to execute their joint vision. Makoid, a member of Marie Aiello Design Studio, worked with Riperts on the home's interior Design.
Ripert wanted the house to have a forested, wild feel. Ferns, towering oaks and weeds surround the house in a natural and deliberate way. In his mind, the bedroom looks like a tree house. Ripert's passion is meditation, and nowhere is this more evident than in his meditation room. It was very important to him to have this room. The room was filled with Nepalese-made statues, sanctimoniously sealed with precious stones and prayers, to house the works collected over the years. From the window, you can see a Buddha statue more than 12 feet high.
