The Whidbey Retreat was designed as a compact and intimate space with a window wall emphasizing the relationship between indoor and outdoor space. An oversized door in the wall opens to a grasscrete patio and smaller windows frame glimpses into the surrounding forest. The exterior skin is made of square cement board panels combined with stained mahogany insets. A board formed concrete wall terminates in a fireplace that is open on three sides - allowing one to see the meadow and mountains beyond, and it creates an ideal place for evening gatherings. Maple plywood warms the interior and radiant heat keeps the concrete floor comfortable underfoot. The final result is a contemporary, light-filled volume that is cleanly detailed and creates a deliberate composition of contrasts.
