Johnson & Johnson has opened the doors to a space crucial for emerging companies, a 30,000 square-foot incubator and innovation lab designed for high-tech and modern scientific research.
EwingCole completed the innovation offices for Johnson & Johnson located in San Francisco, California.
Johnson & Johnson Innovation’s first stand-alone site, JLABS in South San Francisco, features high-tech, modern scientific research space. EwingCole designed the 30,000 sf incubator space to include chemistry, concept, and biology labs; office spaces; conference rooms; and shared common areas for up to 50 emerging companies. Thoughtful planning led to a flexible, open-air scheme which allows for easy growth and encourages collaboration amongst the resident entrepreneurs. Voted as one of the Bay Area’s “coolest offices,” the sleek design includes glass walls, contemporary furniture and finishes, and spectacular Bay views.
Unusual in a laboratory setting, walls of glass separate each lab and office module while providing a sense of openness and a visual connection to other tenants and to the outside. As start-ups expand, they can occupy adjacent modules while maintaining proximity to their office space across the hall. Closed or open, the glass barn doors encourage a sense of a neighborhood, reinforced by a large Interaction lounge, complete with bespoke coffee bar. JLABS offers small companies unprecedented access to highly specialized analytical tools and global videoconferencing, free from operational concerns. A flexible environment where scientists can find inspiration, JLABS is a new paradigm for the biotech industry.
