Project Year:2021
Category:Private Houses
Project Brief
Redesign of a 3300sq’ home over 4 levels, including finished basement. What started as a main floor renovation, quickly expanded into a three-level renovation, which included the re-design of the lower level, principal bedroom, exterior design, landscape design coordination, complete re-design of the backyard and the addition of a new roof deck.
What were the key challenges? With any project, there were some hiccups along the way or surprises when we opened up the walls. But we had such a great working relationship with the project manager, contractor, and their entire team. Our clients were amazing. They trusted us, our vision, and the process. They were patient, and value good design and quality. Having open communication and trust between the contractor, client, and designer is the winning combination. The obvious challenges came in 2020, as with everything else. Construction progress slowed down due to the pandemic, and lead times for materials and furniture were lengthy. Luckily for the homeowners, the interior was completed at that point, so they were able to enjoy the interior of their home without disruption, but progress on the exterior slowed down as lead times on materials grew longer and longer.
What materials did you choose and why?
Because of the aesthetic/concept of contemporary beach living, we leaned into natural materials: warm woods on the floor, white oak on millwork (including slatted wood details and wood wallcovering in the powder) light/white stones with subtle veining to give depth and richness without commanding too much attention and linen in the soft furnishings.
