The Newmode is being launched for the first time, Andrea steps on the keel for the first time. A day with a very calm sea and 2 knots of wind has been chosen. From a technical point of view, the boat was built with three levels: the hull, the deck and an intermediate level which separates the floating volume from the launch chambers of the Gennaker; this can be found either on the right or on the left, or it can allow to house a second Gennaker of different dimensions. This third level is modelled with a double H section which gives an important longitudinal and torsion stiffening, permitting to keep the weights low.
(Second afternoon test, there are about 6 knots of wind)
The boat loses its old property of “containing” and tends to look more like a macro Surf. The Yachtsman works on a sliding platform, connected to the hull without interruption, where he finds himself in absolute ergonomics with all the controls. A single Terrace, therefore, no longer two lugs attached to the hull, without which they woud not be accessibile (the addition turns out to be a functional afterthought).
In the abstraction which anticipates the creation, one may have thought more to a Catamaran that has been deprived of the hull which is not in the water. The thought tends to a “Monoatamaran” where the absence of the second hull is compensated by the movement of the Terrace on the single hull.
The 9.5 sq.m. of the main sail on a 3.5-m. Hull can be felt even with few knots of wind. The sail plan will be easily able to exceed 10 sq.m., thanks to the variable stretch of the Terrace. The maximum of the stretch that the Terrace can offer is 110 cm. The curvature wanted for the Terrace follows through the movements, gathers inside and brings the Yachtsman upwards so that he has more control together with great sensations and enhances the novelty of the design.
On the Terrace you are no longer tied to the belts but to straps where to put your feet. The straps can be mounted according to the best position for the single yachtsman. The Terrace ends with an anatomic lodgement which transmits to the Yachtsman a great control which translates into the maximum straightening thrust. The holes on the Terrace make the structure lighter, let the water flow away instantly, increase the grip and, not to forget, create design. The transparency which is created is pleasing and increases the sensations; also in Capsizing, rescue is made easier by the holes on the Terrace which offers less resistance.
