new york city-based photographer randy scott slavin presents the second in the series of photographic work called ‘alternate perspectives’, comprising surrealist scenes which tunnel both landscapes and urban centers into mysterious vortexes. the artist’s initial work with spherical panoramas led him to the world of stereographic projection, the mapping of a three-dimensionally rounded image onto a flat plane. taking pictures in both metropolises like brooklyn and miami as well as lush green fields and rugged canyons, slavin manipulates these captures into scenic whirlpools, transforming skyscrapers, shrubs and sand into a spinning chromatic spiral. with influence deriving from the mind-bending work of M.C. escher, the scenes are at once magical and perplexing and treat viewers with a curious warped lens on reality.
the new york-based photographer describes the challenges and triumphs of creating the series: ‘when shooting landscapes, you have to wait for the right light and, in the process, deal with everything that mother nature has to offer. ants, mosquitoes, jellyfish, sunburn, rain (lots of rain), freezing winds and treacherous icy hikes are just some of the few joys I experienced while shooting.’
