HED worked with Orange Unified School District to deliver a much needed upgrade at Fred Kelly Stadium to better serve high school students in Orange, California.

The Orange Unified School District’s (OUSD) Fred Kelly Stadium facility is the home field for the El Modena, Orange, Villa Park, and Canyon High School football programs and the center of community activity. The original stadium, built in 1967, is named for Orange Union High student Fred Kelly, who won Olympic Gold in the 110-meter high hurdles in the 1912 games and was the University of Southern California’s first Olympic Gold Medalist.

After over 50 years of use, the stadium was in desperate need of an upgrade. HED was selected to design the replacement field, new bleachers accommodating a capacity of 5,000, ADA compliant press box, concession stands, ticket booths, score board, restrooms, and synthetic track and field. New team rooms, storage, shade structures, accessible path of travel, and a new pedestrian drop zone was also added. The stadium is striped for football, lacrosse, soccer, and track and field events. In honor of its namesake athlete, OUSD plans to install a hurdle Kelly used, and the stadium features an expanded monument wall and seating, as well as a new dedication plaque.
