HGA Architects and Engineers and Perkins+Will have collaborated to create an evidence-based design for the expansion of the Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford located in Palo Alto, California.
Hybrid surgical suites for Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital (a part of Stanford Children’s Health) designed by HGA, executive architect and medical planner, aimed to utilize design to create a comfortable atmosphere for children and their families while simultaneously incorporating operational efficiencies that ensured the best care. These elements were essential as hospital operating rooms can be intimidating for children with, overhead screens and giant machinery.
To facilitate a more inviting atmosphere in the hybrid operating rooms of the Palo Alto, CA pediatric care facility, walls and machines are wrapped in calming imagery with whimsical scenes of forest and beach environments. Research has shown that keeping younger patients calm before a procedure can improve clinical outcomes related to the induction of anesthesia and postsurgical recovery.
The hybrid operating and interventional radiology rooms collocate medical services, allowing for multi-stage procedures to be performed in one location more quickly and safely than before. The design allows patients to go service-to-service without being transferred between buildings, decreasing a patients’ time under anesthesia. Additionally, surgeons can get real-time updates while the surgery is in progress instead of waiting until after to determine if the operation was a success.
