Otro Oaxaca
Located in the heart of the capital of the state of Oaxaca, Otro Oaxaca is set within a rich history and vibrant site that exudes a strong sense of simplicity and honest materiality, balancing the connection between traditional and contemporary architecture. The practical function and thoughtful details of its interior Spaces are designed to pay homage to local craftsmanship, aesthetics and materials while reshaping the accommodation experience.
Originally built in the 1980s in Chinatown, next to the iconic Institute of Graphic Arts of Oaxaca (IAGO), the studio intervened and appropriately maintained the spatial and topographical layers between the adjacent buildings while respecting the site layout and following the original layout of the historic city.
The design blends minimalist aesthetics with the city's vernacular style, with material elements such as brick, valley clay, steel, glass, and concrete woven together to create a sculptural architectural form that not only highlights pure form, but also expresses respect for the material.
Inspired by the Mitla Cross, the main building is presented as a habitable sculpture, where light and stairs complement each other, providing visitors with a different living experience. Entering the hotel through a historic facade that retains the natural brick hue, there is a nearly 40-meter-long corridor transformed from railway ties that both connects and divides the space, and serves as an invitation to explore possibilities.
