McGregor Coxall and design partners BKK worked with the client team comprising Public Transport Victoria (PTV), the City of Port Phillip and Yarra Trams to revitalise the streetscape and upgrade the tram terminus on Acland Street. These works were part of the end-to-end upgrade of Route 96, Melbourne’s busiest tram route, critical to improving the network. The design team worked in close collaboration with stakeholders to deliver a project that would revitalise the precinct making for a more vibrant streetscape with pedestrian-friendly footpaths, a new plaza for a range of events and improved accessibility for tram users. Taking into consideration the wider revitalization underway in the area, McGregor Coxall developed a solution that celebrates the history and culture of St Kilda by prioritising pedestrian access and investing in the long term social, environmental and economic dividends of a more adhesive public realm. The resulting framework will allow Acland Street to maintain it’s intimate scale and secure its position as St Kilda’s vibrant village heart.
